Welcome to Year 2!

Welcome to Year 2’s page for Spring 2

 

                 

 

Last half term we learnt lots of clay skills including rolling, moulding, score and slip and creating relief.

In this second Spring, half-term we will look at events that are beyond living memory, notionally or globally. We will look at the role which Isambard Kingdom Brunell played building ships, docks, bridges, railways and tunnels. Our global theme this half term is Human Rights.

                                                                     

English

We will be reading the story Teacup and then writing a persuasive letter to get someone to come and live in Sheffield.                                                      

 In Book Study we will read Yasmin’s Hammer. Each Monday, we will continue to answer comprehension questions on an extract from a higher level book – Roald Dahl’s The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me.

                                                         

Maths

We will be focussing on Money, Properties of shape, Length and height and Position and Direction.

Science

We will be working on recognising and understanding the properties and uses of everyday materials.

Visits

Thursday 16th March 2023 we will be taking part in the Y2 Sports Day at The EIS.

Home Learning

Your child will receive spellings each week to learn for a test in school. They also have  a Spelling Shed Login to practise their spellings on along with a TT Rockstars login for practising times tables. Your child will also bring home two or three maths questions based on learning that week and handwriting practise. These tasks should only take a 10 minutes or so each night and can be completed across the week.

For Your Information

Reading is one of the most important skills the children need to learn at this age. We expect the children to read their book at home each day for a short time. This needs to be written in their reading record books. The books the children are given will be read throughout the week and will be changed on Fridays.                                                   

As part of Readmore@Phillimore on Wednesdays children who have their book bag will be able to swap their library book and borrow another book for the week.

Our PE days are Mondays and Tuesdays. Please make sure that all children are in the correct PE uniform (white T-shirt, plain black jogging bottoms and trainers), hair is tied up and they are not wearing jewellery. Welcome to Year 2’s page for Spring 1.

In this first Spring half-term we are learning about India and Ghandi’s involvement in its independence. We will look at where India is located and compare it to the UK and also the effect of flooding and seasons. Our global theme is Identity and Diversity.

In English we will be writing a story about finding something beautiful in Darnall based on the book Something Beautiful.

In Maths, we will be focussing on Properties of shape, statistics, Fractions and Length and height

In Book Study we will read Marli’s Tangled Tale, Hermelin The Mouse Detective, The Chimpanzees of Happy Town and The Whisperer. Each Friday, we will be answering comprehension questions on an extract from a higher level book – Roald Dahl’s The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me.

                  

 

 

Science sees us continue our learning about Food Chains and Animals including Humans.

Our PE days are Mondays and Tuesdays. Please make sure that all children are in the correct PE uniform (white T-shirt, plain black jogging bottoms and trainers), hair is tied up and they are not wearing jewellery. The children should come to school wearing their PE uniform on PE days.

Autumn 2

Welcome to Year 2’s page for Autumn 2

In this second Autumn half-term we are learning about the Great Fire Of London and our Global Theme is ‘Peace and Conflict.’

In English we will be learning about the features of non-chronological reports and will be writing a report about Forests.

In Maths, we will be focussing on addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and time.. 

In Book Study we will read Stubby, One Boy’s War and The Dark. Each Friday, we will be answering comprehension questions on an extract from a higher level book.

Autumn 1

Welcome to Autumn 1.

 

In this first Autumn half-term we are learning about Robin Hood and our Global Theme is ‘Social Justice and Equity.’  Our first week is ‘Humanities Week’ where we will learn about Asia, where it is and what it is like there. We will learn about the geography and history of China and compare it to the UK. We will be learning about the mid-Autumn festival, making Chinese dragons and learning about the Great Wall of China.  In English we will be learning about the legend of Robin Hood and we will be writing Autumn poems.

In Maths, we will be focusing on place value and addition and subtraction. 

In Book Study we will read, The Illustrated Robin Hood, Malala’s Magic Pencil and The Story of Ruby Bridges.
