Role of Phillimore School Governors
There are twelve governors on Phillimore School’s Governing Body with representatives from the local community, the Local Authority, parents, and school staff. We aim to support our school and the local community in raising aspirations so all children can benefit from the best possible all round education.
Our main purpose is to provide a strategic view of the school by establishing a vision and setting the purpose and aims of the school within an agreed policy framework. We monitor and evaluate the work of the school and follow progress towards our school improvement strategy. Together with the headteacher and school staff we work hard to raise standards particularly in Numeracy and Literacy . We aim to be a ‘critical friend’ to the school by supporting our head teacher and asking questions regarding our overall progress and effectiveness.
Our Governing Body meets twice a term and in addition we have two Sub-Committees which meet every half term– ‘Resources’ which monitors the school budget, approves spending to improve our buildings and considers staffing issues, health and safety and other matters relating to running the school efficiently. Our other committee is ‘Learning and Achievement’ which considers all matters relating to the school curriculum and the progress and achievement of all pupils.
Governors are expected to visit the school regularly and become familiar with particular aspects of school life. Currently we have ‘link governors’ for Literacy, Numeracy, Safeguarding, Special Needs, Parental Involvement, School Council, Healthy Schools and a Local Business Champion.
We aim to have an open dialogue with parents and consult regularly to find out views and areas for improvement. We aim to have governor representation in school whenever we have a Parent Open day in school and we are also developing an email address for governors at Phillimore.
